MAA NCS / MinnMATYC Fall 2025 meeting

Invited Speaker: Francis Su (MAA Polya Speaker, Harvey Mudd College)

Talk Title: 100 Years of Sperner's Lemma: Proofs, Generalizations, and Applications

Talk Abstract:  Sperner's Lemma is a simple combinatorial result that is surprisingly powerful and useful - bringing together ideas in combinatorics, geometry, and topology while attracting interest from economists and game theorists. I'll explain why, show some old and new proofs, and present some recent generalizations with diverse applications.

Invited Speaker: Rebecca Patrias (2025 Carol Crawford Teaching Award Recipient, University of St. Thomas)

Talk Title: Webs and Tableau Promotion

Talk Abstract:  Standard Young tableaux are central objects in combinatorics, representation theory, and the study of the symmetric group. On the other hand, SL3 webs are planar diagrams that arise in diagrammatic approaches to representation theory. At first glance, these two structures seem unrelated, yet there is a beautiful bijection connecting them. In this talk, we will explore this correspondence and see how it provides new insight into tableaux.
